Jun 05: Risk, Kids Killing, Angry Prez, MA Dems
Jun 4th, 2010 by Sam

What’s on my mind….

RISK: What do Wall Street, Big Oil, climate change, saving for retirement, and wearing helmets have in common? Human are LOUSY at assessing risk.

KIDS KILLING KIDS IN BOSTON: Not my problem, you say? Well, if altruism makes you nervous, don’t you at least want these kids to be productive citizens so they can contribute to your social security fund? Oh that’s right…you want the government to keep its hands off your social security.

ANGRY PRESIDENT: Am I the only one that actually prefers that the President keep a cool head in the face of a disaster? Does that mean I am somehow emotionally-challenged?

A THRILL SEEKER’S PARADISE – THE MASSACHUSETTS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION – Well, maybe not, but… Did the Scott Brown election light a fire under the Dems? Does the success of Dems in the mid-term elections hinge on the unemployment rate? Does it matter if the state auditor talks crazy sometimes?

What do you want to talk about?

May 22: Does Rand Paul = Tea Partiers?? Do Tea Partiers = Repubs?

So much to say… So little time…

  • Would a libertarian call the oil disaster a ‘market correction?’
  • Rand Paul (may I call you Randi?) would it be ok to exclude YOU from the jobs, companies, restaurants that matter? Would you say the same thing if you knew with certainty that you would never be invited to another Tea Party? Another APAC meeting? another Daughters of the American Revolution luncheon?
  • Financial reform bill – you like it?  do you believe it?
  • “Police say four men enticed a 14-year-old boy to get a tattoo on his buttocks, saying they would not pick on him anymore if he allowed it.” Nice.
  • Jobs ! – “The economic recovery in Massachusetts gained traction in April, as employers added jobs at the fastest pace in nearly two decades and the jobless rate fell for the second consecutive month.”
  • Blumenthal – served in Vietnam, during Vietnam… misspoke or what?

What are you thinking about?

Nov 7: Fort Hood massacre; “Good To Be God”, by Tibor Fischer
Nov 7th, 2009 by Sam

Segment 1

Fort Hood massacre. Florida massacre. The Dr. Tiller killing. Terrorism? Alienation? Religious? Hopelessness? What do they have in common? What is different? With unemployment is such bad shape, will there be more of these?

Segment 2

What does it mean to be good? And, should it be encouraged? Or, does that make it a career move, something you do like file your taxes or wash your hands in a public restroom? British novelist Tibor Fischer talks about his new novel “Good to Be God.” Yup, it’s about a guy pretending to be God, a British guy no less, in Miami. Who is trying very hard to be good. From a review in the Guardian:  ”When was the last time you saw hardened drinkers pass around a novel that asks some big philosophical questions?”
