Dec 22: Happy Solstice!
Dec 22nd, 2011 by Sam

The Sun rising above the Arctic plain (H.D. Nygren, NOAA Corps.)

Greetings to all who celebrate during this season.  I celebrate the solstice with family and friends on the longest night of the year.  We share food and drink in our warm house that is lit with candles and holiday lights, and festooned with pine boughs.  Under the sounds of stories and laughter, renaissance music plays softly while the aroma of mulled wine, Greek food, and pine fills the house.  Later we gather around an outside fire and gaze at the stars, pondering our insignificance in the universe and our significance to each other.  We think of the last year and what we will let go, and then think of what we will embrace in the coming year.  The fire reminds of how lucky we are to have shelter and each other.

Best wishes to all as you celebrate your holiday.  Thank you for being part of my year.  I look forward to what’s next.
