Is “The Man” keeping you down? Then you must white! According to a new study conducted by researchers from Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School “shows that America has not achieved the “post-racial” society that some predicted in the wake of Barack Obama’s election, according to the authors of the study.” (aol) Many whites now believe that THEY are the ones being discriminated against. Jim McManus of the Committee Against Repeal of the Alcohol Tax will join us to talk about Massachusetts Ballot Question # 1… which would repeal the tax on alcohol which funds addiction treatment programs…
Should the alcohol industry be required to pay for the negative consequences of it being legal? Should we do something for the businesses near the New Hampshire border? What about other drugs, like marijuana? Legal with taxes to provide addiction treatment? What about gambling?
Their point of view is…
Alcohol is not a necessity and does not deserve a special tax exemption. The only goods in Massachusetts exempt from the sales tax are necessities like food, clothing, and prescriptions. If anything should be taxed, products like cigarettes and alcohol should be. Revenues from the alcohol tax provide dedicated funding for healthcare services for more than 100,000 residents with behavioral health problems. Massachusetts has some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country – the last thing we need is to take money away from prevention and treatment services to make alcohol more accessible. The alcohol tax literally saves lives by reducing teen drinking and funding treatment services to help people beat addictions and getting their lives back on track. Nearly every other state has a sales tax on alcohol. With Massachusetts facing a serious budget deficit, don’t give alcohol a special exemption.

Suzanne Bump is candidate for Massachusetts State Auditor… how thrilling is THAT?!
Well, the auditor is there to make sure that taxes are spent the way they are supposed to be spent…
So, if Tea Partiers and Republicans want to destroy government, you’d think the LAST thing they wanted is to have an effective auditor, wouldn’t you ? They would NOT want to fix gov’t.
Suzanne explains what she wants to do, why she wants to the job, what are her priorities, and why being a CPA is not necessarily the most important thing.

What’s on my mind….
RISK: What do Wall Street, Big Oil, climate change, saving for retirement, and wearing helmets have in common? Human are LOUSY at assessing risk.
KIDS KILLING KIDS IN BOSTON: Not my problem, you say? Well, if altruism makes you nervous, don’t you at least want these kids to be productive citizens so they can contribute to your social security fund? Oh that’s right…you want the government to keep its hands off your social security.
ANGRY PRESIDENT: Am I the only one that actually prefers that the President keep a cool head in the face of a disaster? Does that mean I am somehow emotionally-challenged?
A THRILL SEEKER’S PARADISE – THE MASSACHUSETTS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION – Well, maybe not, but… Did the Scott Brown election light a fire under the Dems? Does the success of Dems in the mid-term elections hinge on the unemployment rate? Does it matter if the state auditor talks crazy sometimes?
What do you want to talk about?
